Begin with 8am pickup at your Arusha town hotel, then take in views of the Tanzania countryside on the 2-hour drive to Tarangire National Park. Watch for herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle on a morning game drive, and try to spot some of the parks leopards, cheetah, and 700 resident lions. Tarangire is believed to have the largest concentration of elephants on earth, and massive groups of 300 elephants thunder through the park. Wildlife thrives year-round in Tarangire, but game is especially dense between June and September, when migratory animals crowd around dry-season water sources. Pause for a picnic lunch, then continue through the park on an afternoon game drive: animals flock to the edge of Lake Burungi and Tarangire’s baobab and acacia forests shelter hundreds of species of birds as well as tree climbing pythons. Listen for the sounds of giant kingfishers, hoopoes, and the white-bellied go away bird, and scan the ground for disused termite mounds that are often home to dwarf mongoose. When your afternoon game drive concludes, make the return trip to Arusha and finish the day with drop-off at your hotel.
